Manage assessment categories and definitions

Assessment categories describe the areas in which trainees are evaluated. Sections group related categories, while category definitions explain what staff should consider when recording an assessment.

Categories and sections are configurable for each training program.

Open category settings

  1. Open Admin → Training Programs.
  2. Select the intended program’s name or Settings.
  3. Open Categories.

Create a section

Select Add Section, enter the section information, and save. Use sections to group related assessment categories, such as knowledge, performance, or professional conduct, according to your agency’s model.

Add a category definition

  1. Choose the option to add a category definition.
  2. Select the section it belongs to.
  3. Enter the category name.
  4. Write or paste the definition.
  5. Format the definition for readability and save.

Use clear, agency-approved wording so trainers understand the criteria they are applying.

Format the definition

The definition editor supports formatted text, including lists, headings, emphasis, and links where offered. Use the editor’s controls to organize longer definitions.

If pasted text from a word processor displays unexpected formatting, clear that formatting and reapply the layout using the editor’s controls.

Review the staff view

Open Resources and review the category definitions. Also open a practice DOR and check the category information or Definitions controls. Confirm that categories appear under the correct sections and that their definitions are readable.

Revise a category already used in training

Editing an existing category definition can change the wording displayed with historical training records. Preserve the relevant training exports and review the effect before changing an in-use definition.

When an existing definition needs to remain associated with past training, review the option of disabling that category and creating a replacement. Contact support for help planning the change and checking historical records.

Keep category changes consistent

When categories change, also review any category-specific templates and other settings that reference them. Explain the revised assessment criteria to the staff who will use them.
